MODEL HISTORY

The Porsche Boxster is a mid-engined two-seater roadster built by Porsche. The Boxster is Porsche’s first road vehicle to be originally designed as a roadster since the 550 Spyder.

The first-generation Boxster (the 986) was introduced in late 1996; it was powered by a 2.5-litre flat six-cylinder engine. The design was heavily influenced by the 1992 Boxster Concept. In 2000, the base model was upgraded to a 2.7-litre engine and the new Boxster S variant was introduced with a 3.2-litre engine. In 2003, styling and engine output was upgraded on both variants.

Production of the 986 began at the former Porsche 928 facility in Stuttgart, Germany in 1996. Valmet Automotive also manufactured Boxsters under contract to Porsche at a facility in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The Boxster was Porsche’s biggest volume seller from its introduction in 1996 until the company introduced the Cayenne sport utility vehicle in 2003.

EXTERIOR

The 986 is a modern tribute to the artistry and innovation that defined the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder: agile, elegant and lightweight. Finished in the quintessential shade of Arctic Silver, the paintwork still presents in superb condition and its bright metallic finish appears crisp and sharp, especially when it catches the natural light.

Having covered sensible mileage, the body remains in good cosmetic condition overall, with only the typically isolated stone chips to the front bumper and a handful of light age-related marks commensurate with use. A matching hardtop is included, while the soft-top hood presents with no notable cosmetic defects and operates swiftly and quietly.

INTERIOR

Refined simplicity, this Boxster’s interior is driver focused and unmistakably Porsche in build quality. The driving position is first class with the waistline of the bodywork relatively high, so feels very snug even with the roof lowered. With a wind deflector, and aforementioned hard top, the car has the refinements in place for all year round motoring.

The interior echoes the exterior condition with minimal signs of wear over above it’s covered mileage and age – no blemishes to any of the dash or switches, and no creasing or sagging to the vulnerable bolsters.

The three spoke crested steering wheel remains unmarked and free from any unsightly scuffs.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

At the heart of the Boxster’s lies it’s namesake boxer engine – the 2.7 water-cooled flat-six has real character, with a distinct sound that gets better the higher you climb the rev range. The central exit amplifies the six cylinder warble beautifully, nestled snugly into the rear bumper arrangement.

Out on the road the car is totally immersive and rewards even the most experienced driver, whilst being wholly approachable the tactility and partnership between steering and drivetrain remains deeply impressive.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

All of the 18 inch Turbo twist colour crested alloys present in good condition with matching Uniroyal Rainsport tyres.

Black callipers present well, with discs and pads displaying plenty of life.

HISTORY FILE

Delivered by AFN Chiswick in September 2002, this exceptionally well-preserved 986 has clearly enjoyed a cherished and pampered life, reflected in its outstanding MOT history throughout ownership.

The car has never covered more than 6,000 miles between services, a strong indication of the careful maintenance and light use it has benefitted from over the years. As a result, it presents beautifully and performs exactly as it should.

Accompanying the car is an impressive history file comprising the original stamped service book, a substantial collection of invoices and receipts, along with a selection of previous MOT certificates.
