MODEL HISTORY

Throughout the years from the first incarnation as the E30, the M3 has become the benchmark vehicle against which most sporting saloons are compared. despite aggressive competition from Mercedes-AMG and the Audi quattros.

The fourth generation M3 was first announced in March 2007 at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. Before its production BMW originally set out to name it the M4 along with the rest of the 3 Series range, however due to the interest in retaining the M3 line and its iconic status, this change was soon abandoned.

The inline 6 S54 engine in the previous E46 M3 was replaced with the S65B40 engine which is a naturally aspirated, 4-litre V8 that is based on the 5-litre S85B50 V10 that powered the E60/E61 M5 and the E63/E64 M6. It delivers 414 bhp at 8300 rpm. The engine comes straight from BMW’s Formula 1 foundry in Landshut cast alongside the Sauber F1 teams powerplants. It uses a pair of oil pumps that feed lubricant between the engine’s two sumps, a double Vanos valve-timing system which increases performance across the awesome 8400rpm rev-range, as well as a throttle butterfly for each individual cylinder to guarantee a fast, precise throttle response. The S65 Engine is also 15kg lighter than previous straight six found in the E46 M3 and has a ECU capable of 200 million calculations per second incorporating efficient Dynamics fuel saving and emissions reducing technology.

The E90 M3 LCI was introduced in September of 2008 (2009 model year) and changes were limited to the addition of revised taillights with luminous strips and LED turn signals aswell as an upgrade to the Idrive system. The E92 M3 and E93 M3 LCI followed in March of 2010 (2011 model year) and changes were also limited to only the addition of full-LED taillights. The Competition Package, known by the internal designation “ZCP”, was introduced in March of 2010 as an option for the E92 M3 coupe in the UK market. It consists of 10mm shorter springs, Electronic Damping Control with revised software parameters, including continuously-variable shock firmness in Sport mode and Exclusive Y-spoke (Style 359M) cast alloy wheels in staggered 9×19-inch (front) and 10×19-inch (rear) sizes.

EXTERIOR

One of BMW’s most recent Individual programmes revealed the stunning San Marino Blue metallic – a sparkling colour that look all class aligned with chrome pipes, bright silver Comp wheels and the M3 branded front quarter vents. With the colour concept constantly changing depending upon conditions, the shape of this beautifully proportioned E92 can be enjoyed from all angles and under our studio lights this example looks absolutely first class.

Panel fit and finish is superb with only a handful of stone chips to the bonnet belying the cars age and mileage. The carbon roof shows an unmarked and unbroken weave throughout, deeply lacquered with an ultra smooth finish.

INTERIOR

The Individual theme continues inside with a heated and extended ‘Platinumblack’ combination rarely seen in modern Motorsport variants. Providing an elegant and considered contrast to the stunning paintwork, this combination truly typifies a programme where customers can achieve something unique.

The seats show no real signs of wear, with no sagging evident with the bolsters still in good order. Piano black inserts on the door cards and centre console provide a classy touch entirely befitting the bespoke specification. With heated electric memory seats, cruise control, USB and phone connectivity, professional navigation and climate control provide all the comforts of a grand-tourer. The programmable M button transforms the car into a formidable driving machine allowing pre-programming of the EDC, DCT and traction control settings whilst tightening throttle response.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The S65 V8 engine barks into life with an epic roar and settles to a purposeful idle quickly after. Performing it’s best work wound up, the performance through the rev range is truly addictive all the way up to the heady 8,5k rpm redline.

The 7 speed DCT gearbox is superb and a huge step on from BMW last SMG setup providing both smooth fully automatic function or manual changes.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The stunning silver 359M Comp pack wheels look fantastic against the blue bodywork and remain in perfect condition wrapped in premium Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber all round.

The brake discs still have many miles left in them with no evidence of lipping, as do the pads which show very little wear.
