MODEL HISTORY

Typewriters or fast cars, this was the choice for young Burkard, son of the German Bovensiepen family that by trade made typewriters. This was back in 1960s when in the face of a disapproving German Automotive manufacturing industry Burkard established Alpina, a BMW tuning business. Tinkering with carburettors and cylinder heads Burkard had success with the then current BMW 1500 range in 1963 and by 1965 Alpina had a turnover of 200K and seven employees.

Alpina really established itself from 1968 with a hugely successful racing career that spanned 9 winning years, the highlight being 1970 in which Alpina team cars won the electrifying European touring car championship, the German hill climbing championship and the prestigious Spa 24 hour race. Legendary race drivers Derek Bell, Niki Lauda and Hans Stuck have all raced Alpina prepared BMW 2002s and CS coupes during their racing careers. Since 1970 Alpina have had TUV status allowing them to build and register cars as Alpina rather than under the BMW badge. All Alpina cars can still be bought through BMW dealerships and still fall inside BMWs warranty scheme, a testament to Alpina’s engineering achievement and ability.

The B3 GT represents one of the ultimate developments of that philosophy. Introduced in 2024, the GT takes the already formidable B3 and turns the wick up considerably. The familiar 2,993cc twin-turbocharged straight-six was further developed to produce 529 PS and 730 Nm, with ALPINA also revising the transmission, chassis and steering response. In Touring form the result is frankly extraordinary — 0-62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and a quoted maximum speed of 190 mph.

Unlike many modern performance estates, the B3 GT remains deliberately understated. There are GT-specific aerodynamic additions, the trademark ALPINA details and the unmistakable 20-spoke wheel design, but underneath it remains a car designed to cover enormous distances at enormous speed without sacrificing comfort or usability.

EXTERIOR

The presence of this Alpina B3 GT Touring is hard to ignore, with the G21’s sharp proportions softened just enough by Alpina’s more elegant approach. Daytona Violet Metallic gives the car a rich, almost jewel-like finish in changing light, while the black Shadow Line trim adds a subtle edge around the glass and roof rails.

The gold Alpina Deko graphics and matching badging bring real character to the specification without feeling overdone, tying in beautifully with the gold detailing elsewhere on the car. Combined with the more purposeful GT front treatment and black quad-exit exhaust system, the result feels distinctive and unmistakably Alpina.

INTERIOR

Continuing the exclusive Alpina feel, the interior demonstrates a level of craftsmanship and refinement that feels distinctly more bespoke than the standard 3 Series cabin. Subtle Alpina detailing runs throughout, while the beautifully finished Lavalina leather steering wheel is picked out with elegant gold stitching, adding a more distinctive and contemporary touch to the cabin.

Extended Ivory White Merino leather adorns the seats, doors and lower dashboard, creating a wonderfully light and luxurious atmosphere that is enhanced further by the panoramic glass sunroof. Heated memory front seats, Apple CarPlay, Harman Kardon audio and BMW Live Cockpit Professional provide the expected modern comforts, while the signature Alpina instrument display and build plaque preserve the sense of occasion that has always set these cars apart.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

At the heart of the B3 GT sits BMW’s formidable 3.0-litre S58 twin-turbocharged straight-six, extensively reworked by Alpina to produce an impressive 522 bhp and 538 lb ft of torque. Power is delivered through Alpina’s recalibrated 8-speed Switch-Tronic automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, allowing the Touring to surge from 0-62 mph in just 3.5 seconds before continuing on to an extraordinary 190 mph.

Despite the headline figures, the character remains unmistakably Alpina; effortless torque, immense cross-country pace and a wonderfully refined delivery make the B3 GT feel every bit as accomplished at motorway speeds as it does when fully exploited. It is devastatingly fast without ever becoming frantic, which is perhaps the greatest compliment you can pay an Alpina powertrain.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Classic forged wheel remains the purist’s choice and is arguably one of the most recognisable OEM designs ever produced. These 20-inch forged examples are finished in a striking gold tone, providing a superb contrast against the Daytona Violet paintwork.

Benefiting from bespoke Alpina chassis tuning and adaptive damping the braking performance is equally serious, with 395mm front discs and 345mm rear discs providing the stopping power to match the car’s immense pace.
