The Black Series. A very suggestive title for AMGs most track focused and hardcore products. Produced in limited numbers, they are very exclusive and subject to intensive engineering modifications to increase engine performance and further sharpen the chassis. A considered weight reduction diet is executed and flamboyant styling tweaks make for a dramatic conversion to provide ultimate track performance. There have only been five Black series model runs so far, each very desirable and extremely hard to find.

The C63 AMG Black Series is no exception. Only available in the Coupe body, it includes an uprated version of the C63 AMG engine, putting out 517 PS at 6800rpm. This makes for wild performance, hitting the benchmark sprint to sixty in 4.2 seconds, befitting the track focused and aggressive additions to the styling. Yet being a Mercedes Benz, the duality of character is preserved, with the C63 Black retaining excellent road manners.

Headquartered in Affalterbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Mercedes-AMG GmbH (commonly known as AMG), is the high performance division of Mercedes-Benz. AMG independently engineers and re-manufactures Mercedes Benz vehicles into higher performance derivatives.

All AMG engines are hand built, using a “one man, one engine” philosophy at the Affalterbach plant. Each AMG engine builder stamps the engines they produce with an engraved plaque depicting their signature. According to Mercedes-Benz, there are only about 50 AMG engine builders.

AMG developed its own V8 engine (dubbed M156 in development) for the DTM series which was then carried over for use in their road car. Most of the M156-engined models used the 7G-Tronic automatic transmission, however the more recent 2009 SL63, 2010 E63, and 2012 C63 use the 7-speed MCT transmission. The MCT is an evolution of the 7G-Tronic ‘box but with a wet-clutch instead of a torque converter. Main benefits include faster, smoother changes and a claimed 10 per cent improvement in fuel consumption.

Finished in a factory coat of Designo Magno Night Black matte paint, this C63 Black Series flaunts itself as the weapons-grade track missile that it is. The aesthetics of C63 Coupe are seismically altered by the the widely flared wheel arches, black 19 inch AMG alloys and additional cuts and slashes across the bodywork, enhancing the aerodynamics and cooling of the car. The striking matt hue is broken up by technical details such as the front splitter, side skirts and rear spoiler made from composite glossy carbon fibre. The window surrounds are finished in silver, matching the silver rims of the alloy wheels. The red brake calipers are clear to see, nestling behind the spokes and complete a colour scheme that matches the intent and focus of this very special limited machine.

The paintwork of this example is in excellent order and with few blemishes to report across the bodywork.

The ‘Alpaca Grey Twin Leather’ interior of the C63 Black series fuses a true racing aesthetic with a more comfortable Mercedes Benz feel. The seats are upholstered in leather with alcantara seat centres, offering up plenty of comfort and grip. Red stitching defines the contours of the seats and door cards with matching red belts completing the sports interior  Touch points on the steering wheel and gear selector are also covered generously with alcantara and finished with red stitching. A single, subtle plaque on the dash marks this AMG variant as a Black series mounted on carbon fibre trim.

The rear bench provides two individual seats for rear seat passengers and on this example, looks to have been used on very rare occasions. There is little discernible wear across the interior, with only the drivers seat bolster showing some faint marking. As expected, there is a very generous boot on the C63 ready to take your helmets and associated trackday paraphernalia or the family weekend away bags.

AMG are known for their sonically expressive powerplants and the C63 Black series certainly does not disappoint. The mighty 6.3 litre V8 starts with a loud flourish of revs, emanating a sense of relentless performance to the lucky and expectant driver. A significant increase of 59bhp over the standard engine equates to a mighty 517bhp. The MCT 7 speed transmission and limited slip differential allow this power to be metered out with amazing accuracy, whether picking out an apex or enjoying hand fulls of opposite lock.

The forged allow wheels are a triumph both technically and aesthetically, the black spokes matching the bodywork beautifully and highlighted by the silver rim with AMG proudly inscribed. Shod in a set of premium MO rated Continental Contisport 5s all round; 255/35/19 front and 285/30/19 rear, the tyres show excellent tread on the front with brand new tyres just fitted on the rear.

Composite discs and lightweight bright red calipers save weight and offer huge retardation to temper the tremendous power on offer.
