The CL63 is the flagship Coupe from Mercedes Benz. Based on the S Class, it is one of the largest coupes on the market and has always been considered a technological showcase for the future of motoring advancements.

The S Class underpinnings makes for a substantial car, from the original SEC to the CL coupe. The more recent designs have been based on a pillarless concept, allowing for the windows to be lowered without a B pillar to disturb the elegant lines. The glass house has also become a CL design feature, with the rear screen in particular, with its varying and intersecting curvatures forming an important part of the design. Ultimate luxury is of course the goal with the interior and Mercedes Benz do not disappoint with an amazing array of pioneering technology and incredible comfort.

The W216 iteration was shown at the 2006 Paris motorshow and offered with four engines, including the 6.2L V8-powered CL 63 AMG, which sprinted to sixty in a scant 4.5 seconds – an amazing achievement when you consider the W216 CL is heavier than the equivalent W221 S Class, mainly due to the reinforcement required in the chassis to compensate for the lack of B pillar.

The CL63 was auguably the most special of the W216 CL family, for its engine was from the mighty AMG, the high performance division of Mercedes-Benz. All AMG engines are hand built, using a “one man, one engine” philosophy at their Affalterbach plant. Each AMG engine builder stamps the engines they produce with an engraved plaque depicting their signature. According to Mercedes-Benz, there are only about 50 AMG engine builders.

LHD, Designo Magma Red (586), AMG Drivers Package (250), AMG Exterior carbon package (773), AMG carbon fibre look trim (H73), Leather Exclusive (500), Front dynamic seats (432), Climatised front seats (401), COMAND APS (527), Thermotronic climate control (581), Night view assist (610), Intelligent light system (622), Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system, DVD changer (814), TV receiver (863), Linguatronic (390), Electric sunblind for rear window (540), Reversing camera (218), Refrigerated compartment (308).

Bold and brash is not normally an association you relate to Mercedes Benz, but the CL coupe has always pushed indulgently into these boundaries. A huge V8 powering a full sized pillarless coupe with four seats is already pretty dramatic, and even more so when finished in the bright and vibrant hue of Designo Magma Red.

The colour shows off the lines of the CL to perfection and beautifully frames the large and complex glasshouse, especially the rear screen with its multiple intersecting curves, a distinguishing design feature for the Mercedes CL. As ever, the imposing Mercedes grille dominates aesthetically, but the Magma Red brings out the details of the car, such as the slashes on the side of each bumper and vents with their smart chrome surrounds. This CL63 sports the AMG Carbon Exterior Package, which adds carbon fibre accoutrements to the mix.

The bodywork presents well with no dents or marks considering both the age and size of the car. The paint shows a consistent shade across the bodywork with very few marks to report, proudly setting itself apart from other CL’s in the more typical and sombre colour palette.

Ultimate luxury and comfort is what the interior of the CL63 is all about. On opening the door, you note the polished door edges and the simply huge armchairs with there highly detailed design and perforated leather, ready to envelop both driver and passenger. The interior is finished in Cream with Charcoal Upper dash with red stitching. The AMG carbon fibre style trim hints at the more sporting intentions of this CL63.

For all the huge functionality of the CL, the interior is simple and elegant, with many of the controls accessed via the Mercedes COMMAND system and a button pad hidden under the centre console rotary controller.

As you would expect from a flagship Mercedes, the interior has a solid feel to it, the light coloured seats show little sign of use and the leather remains soft and supportive whilst the interior touch points look and feel like new. The rear seats are also expansive for a coupe and show very little wear.

The beating heart of any AMG is its engine and the CL65 is powered by their mighty 6.3 litre V8 engine. It is a sign of that time that this engine is naturally aspirated, replacing the smaller capacity but supercharged mill in the previous car. The naturally aspirated lump pushes out some 525 bhp and 465 lb ft of torque. It is naturally bombastic, sounds glorious and suits the demeanour of the car to perfection. There is no doubt of the sound and power of the engine, but on visual inspection, it also looks great and presents well considering the mileage.

The AMG’s Speedshift 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission apportions all this power to the road (via the rear tyres!) and does an exceptional job in changing gears smoothly or with great speed as the driver demands.

A huge coupe calls for huge alloy wheels and of course, AMG deliver, with a 20 inch diameter rim. Finished in a bi-colour star spoke design, combining a polished finish with glossy black details, each wheel proudly has an AMG badge to denote its heritage.

The wheels are free from any marks or damage and really pop with the Magma Red paint. The tyres are a set of Continental Contact 2’s with the front axle on 255/35/20s and the rear axle a fulsome 275/35/20, all showing good tread.

This CL63 was ordered new to a very high specification by a wealthy customer in the middle east.. It was then acquired by its next custodian before the current owner bought the car in 2015.

On purchase a large service at Emirates Motor Company, an Authorised Distributor of Mercedes Benz, was carried out at 60,278 miles. It was looked after by this main dealer up to 2016, where the current owner then bought the CL63 back to the U.K for use here.

The very respected independent specialist MB-Nottingham took over service duties and have completed a huge amount of remedial work at 81,623 miles in November 2017, including new brakes, refurbished suspension and other detail work, including an up to date service.

This CL is not due another service until November 2018 and will be supplied with a new MOT at the point of sale.
