While this E46 is known as the M3 Competition Package (ZCP) in the US and mainland Europe, it is also known as the M3 CS (Coupe Sport) in the UK. (option S7MAA = Competition Packet).
While the M3 CSL was never exported to the United States, for 2005 BMW introduced an M3 Competition Package in both Europe and the US (a.k.a. CS/Coupe Sport in the UK): a £2,500 option which offered a number of upgrades taken from M3 CSL parts bin. The package includes:
- 19-inch BBS spin-cast (flow formed) alloy wheels (marketed as “forged”); 19″x8″ front, 19″x9.5″ rear: weigh 26 lb (12 kg), the 8″ front is exclusive to the ZCP/CS, the CSL has the 8.5″ version, the rears are the same as the CSL.
- Specially tuned spring rates for the Competition Package; this was carried over to all M3 production from 12/04 on.
- CSL steering rack: More direct steering ratio of 14.5:1 (vs. standard M3s 15.4:1)
- CSL’s M-Track Mode enabled with a button mounted on the steering wheel (deletion of cruise control and steering wheel mounted radio/phone controls).
- CSL’s Larger front disc/rotor of 13.6 inches (from 12.6 inches) (345mm from 325mm) with Standard M3 calipers, but painted black and with larger caliper carriers.
- CSL’s Larger piston in rear calipers and standard 12.9 inch (328mm) rear rotors, again, with black painted calipers.
- Alcantara steering wheel and hand brake covers.
- Interlagos Blue exterior paint available as an exclusive colour option.
- Unique cube aluminum interior trim. (optional).
While the CS shares some bolt on parts with the CSL, the engine and gearbox are the same as a non Competition Package M3, as are all the main hardware modules, mk60 DSC, Engine and SMG DME (where fitted) etc, Also other than M-Track mode, CSL brake and the steering angle sensor calibrations the CS shares all its software with that of the standard M3.
In the UK, the M3 CS is often referred to as a Club Sport, however this is incorrect, as it was only ever officially used in the UK by BMW (UK) as a designation of a special edition E46 330Ci (coupe), and called a “clubsport” (one word no space) in all sales documentation for that specific model.
Electric folding mirrors, Heated Seats, Nav system professional, Electric sunroof, Aluminium Trim, Harman Kardon HiFi, 6 CD changer, PDC, Xenons, Bluetooth prep, M rear spoiler, Rain sensing wipers.
The solid Jet black is beautifully fluid, full of menace and shows a deep and consistent shine throughout. The detailing team have worked to produce a stunning example that looks as good as the pictures suggest. Panel fit and finish is superb with a generous provision of PPF throughout to maintain and protect. None of the trim or rubber seals are damaged or showing any wear and there are no marks or chips to any of the glass or lights.
This E46 M3 represents the true image of the modern classic BMW with a considered style of purposeful proportions and elegant lines.
The interior matches the exterior condition, it looks, feels and smells brand new with not a mark to be found; the leather still retaining its matte finish from new with only the lightest of driver’s bolster wear to report. The dash and door cards are in excellent condition and the steering wheel retains its texture as you’d expect, with the M sport stitching perfectly clean and proudly displaying its Motorsport heritage.
All of the electrics work as they should whilst the spec extends to the sublime Harman Kardon audio, Navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Having been solely maintained by BMW UK main dealers, this S54 is in tip-top condition; a technical masterpiece with exceptional performance and a buzz saw engine note all whilst delivering respectable economy. The car drives incredibly well and remains tight and in keeping with its low mileage; the CSL steering rack and revised springs / dampers make a significant difference to the car’s poise and performance on the road.
The SMG II gearbox offers considerations for both cruising and more spirited driving and operates exactly as it should.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Arguably one of the finest production car designs the 19″ lightweight alloy wheels show the CS apart from the standard production car, although these are spun cast as opposed to the forged items you find on the CSL. All the alloy wheels are in excellent condition while all four wheels are shod in Michelin Supersports that still show plenty of tread.
The larger brakes borrowed from the CSL show very well, with plenty of pad / disc life and free of pad material in the cross drilled area.
This CS was first registered in February 2006 by Sytner Nottingham with the running-in check completed just two months later at 1,260 miles.
The car has subsequently been serviced on a further 6 occasions, with the most recent in May of this year at 46,871 miles.
With the airbag recall complete, huge supporting paperwork for BMW servicing and all MOT test certificates the car has been the recipient of multiple health checks and has always shown to be an excellent example.
