BMW launched its compact 1-Series 5-door hatchback in 2004, as the smallest and cheapest car in its range, and it proved a big hit with the motoring public. In 2007, the car was facelifted and the model range expanded to include a 3-door hatchback, 2-door convertible and coupe.
The high-performance version of the car, the 1 Series M Coupe ( or simply ‘1M Coupe’) was announced in 2010, developed by BMW’s famous motorsport branch, BMW M. It used the 3-litre M TwinPower Turbo straight-six cylinder petrol engine, providing explosive power build-up, beefy torque and endless power.
Other features included the high-performance M Chassis, a high-tech braking system featuring compound discs perforated and connected via a floating arrangement, a differential lock for more traction and greater stability when cornering, and ‘M Dynamic Mode’ , which made controlled drifts possible. The car was offered only with a closely-graduated six-speed manual gearbox.
The exterior appearance was also altered from the standard 1-Series Coupe, with a significantly broader track width, air inlets on the low front apron, strongly contoured side sections with powerfully flared wing extensions, M wing mirrors and side air vents, and twin tailpipes on either side. The car was offered in just three colours – Valencia Orange, Black Sapphire and Alpine White – while wheels were 19-inch light-alloy models in the M-specific Y-spoke styling.
Inside, was a M instrument panel with Alcantara-covered hood, M leather steering wheel with highly contoured rim and ergonomic thumbrests, and M Sport seats in black Boston leather with contrasting stitching.
Despite originally intending to make just 2,700 of these pocket rockets, BMW continued to produce the car until June 2012, with a total of 6,309 cars eventually sold worldwide, almost 1,000 of which went to North America.

The aggressive lines of this rare modern classic, infamous for its compact aggression, are highlighted perfectly by the glowing Valencia bodywork. With a deep shine to the orange metallic paint, which looks stunning under the studio lights, there is an emphasis on the large wheel arches, multiple vent air scooped front bumper and the wide but compact nature of this muscular car.
This example presents virtually as new- commendable previous ownership has ensured the car presents consistently well alongside a good specification from the factory.
The black Boston leather is in excellent condition and remains soft and supple throughout. The cabin is finished with Kyalami orange stitching that adds definition to the seats and interior. Alcantara adorns the trim enhancing the motorsport theme, with further stitching to the instrument shroud, door cards, dashboard, gear gaiter and handbrake.
The leather steering wheel retains its deep textured appearance while the M badged dials are neatly tucked behind. Sat Nav and a multi media system are fitted alongside the optional Harmon Kardon surround sound system, digital radio, AUX inputs and access to BMW online portal.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The straight 6 turbo offers elastic performance across the rev range, potent and punchy down low and happy to rev-out when required. The engine is in excellent health having just been serviced by BMW Thames Ditton in June 2017.
The 6 speed manual transmission is a joy to use and a rare sight in today’s cars – a slick and precise throw with excellent pedal position is the life blood of M Power.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The Anthracite Y spoke 19 inch alloys are in pristine condition wrapped in Michelin PilotSport rubber, all of which show plenty of tread depth.
Brakes are in great shape displaying no indication of hard / excessive use or pad build up in the cross drilled openings.
First registered in April of 2011, the car returned to the supplying dealer for the correct running in service at 922 miles.
The car has evidently benefitted from diligent ownership. The maintenance booklet reveals a meticulous service history, with a further 6 visits to BMW at the following intervals;
