The RS4 B7 is produced by Audi’s high-performance division, Audi Sport GmbH in Neckarsulm, Germany and based on the A4 platform. It was first showcased in February 2005 at Audi’s ‘Quattro Night’ in their headquarters in Ingolstadt. They were made in limited numbers between 2006 and 2008, the RS4 became available in Europe in mid 2006. Positioned above Audis ‘S’ model specification the ‘RS’ initials stand for ‘racing sport’ or ‘RennSport’ in German. RS models use Audi’s latest advancements in technology and is only available in Audi’s signature drive train, Quattro four wheel drive.
The engine in the B7 RS4 is based on the all-alloy 4.2 V8 also found in the B6 S4, a highly reworked, high-revving variant that utilised Fuel Stratified Injection (FSi). Reworked by Quattro engineers the engine includes a new cylinder block construction, two overhead camshafts with variable valve timing on both exhaust and intake valves, fixed length intake runners with adjustable tumble flaps, increased crankcase breathing, a low-pressure fuel return system and a baffled oil sump (preventing oil starvation when cornering at high speed). This resulted in 90 per cent of the total torque (317 lb ft) being available between 2,250 and 7,600 rpm.
Audi Sport made sure that there was no mistaking this for a lesser model, with heavily flared wheel arches covering wider tracks and 19 inch wheels. Alumnium was used for the front wings and bonnet to reduce weight, making this a very special fast-road machine, and all the more dramatic in Avant form.
RHD, Misano Red Pearl Effect (N9N9), Recaro seats black leather/fabric seat coverings (N1J), Super sports suspension (2ME), Heated front and rear seats (PSH), Navigation system DVD based (PNU), Adaptive lights (8Q5), CD changer (7A2), Flat bottom steering wheel, Bose sound system, Aluminium Trim, Parking sensors front and rear.
Audi have forged a unique reputation in creating performance estate variants and with the B7 they remain true to form with deep sills, wide arches and huge road presence. The Misano Red (N9N9) paint on this example is exemplary, rich and consistent across the bodywork. The front end is extremely clean with only a few tiny marks commensurate with age and mileage, pointing to a careful and fastidious ownership. With bold arches, much like the B5, there is scope for peppering but again there is nothing major to report.
The matte aluminium cabin surround, roof rails and mirrors really set the car off and remain fresh, clean and smooth to touch.
The fit and finish of the modern day Audi has a hewn from solid feel and the cabin here has worn particularly well. The wing back Recaros dominate entry into the cabin and as one of the first cars to debut the Sportster CS they look immediately at home with the addition here of rare factory fabric inserts.
The flat bottomed steering wheel and crisp aluminium trim give the interior a very sporting and elegant feel and this RS4 still looks as fresh as it did in 2007. The carpets, gearbox tunnel and entry strips are pleasingly free of marks with switchgear in excellent condition and in fine operational order.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The Audi service schedule has been perfectly maintained so the car is in great mechanical condition. The high revving 4.2 V8 under the bonnet makes for an addictive soundtrack and looks ever bit the part, on show and surrounded with RS4 logos and carbon trim rather than hidden under plastic covers.
The 6 speed Getrag manual gearbox is mated to Audi’s Torsen based quattro system providing superior grip in all weather conditions.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The double spoke alloy wheels are in perfect condition, shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres showing good tread and sized 225/35/19 on both axles.
The Audi Brembo gloss black 6 pot brakes provide huge stopping power, maintaining excellent feel and performance with the front discs and pads replaced for sale.
Supplied new via Pentraeth Audi and first registered in 27/03/2007, this RS4 Avant has full Audi main dealer history, the service file presenting perfectly with all books and manuals available and service receipts annotating the seven visits to Audi.
Alongside a brimming history file, every MOT certificate is available in a separate folder alongside the RNS-E Nav case. The last visit to the main dealer in March of this year leaves no doubt that the car is in fine fettle, mechanically up-to-date and ready to go.
