Typewriters or fast cars, this was the choice for young Burkard, son of the German Bovensiepen family that by trade made typewriters. This was back in 1960s when in the face of a disapproving German Automotive manufacturing industry Burkard established Alpina, a BMW tuning business. Tinkering with carburettors and cylinder heads Burkard had success with the then current BMW 1500 range in 1963 and by 1965 Alpina had a turnover of 200K and seven employees.
Alpina really established itself from 1968 with a hugely successful racing career that spanned 9 winning years, the highlight being 1970 in which Alpina team cars won the electrifying European touring car championship, the German hill climbing championship and the prestigious Spa 24 hour race. Legendary race drivers Derek Bell, Niki Lauda and Hans Stuck have all raced Alpina prepared BMW 2002s and CS coupes during their racing careers.
Since 1970 Alpina have had TUV status allowing them to build and register cars as Alpina rather than under the BMW badge. All Alpina cars can still be bought through BMW dealerships and still fall inside BMWs warranty scheme, a testament to Alpinas engineering achievement and ability.
The Alpina B10 V8 was first introduced in 1997 and was the first Alpina to be based on the E39 platform. For this model Alpina cast a complete new 4.6 litre engine block to replace the 4.4 litre found in the BMW 540i on which it was based. Other engine modifications included lighter high-compression Mahle pistons, a new crankshaft and a reprogrammed Motronic computer system. The result of these modifications was increase of nearly 60 bhp over the standard engine. Alpina also equipped new ventilated disc brakes all around, twin-tube gas pressure shocks, new anti-roll bars and 18 inch Alpina alloy wheels.
Due to the B10s capability to be both impressively fast and sporty but at the same time relaxed and palatial, it has become one of the best-selling models in Alpina history, with over 1300 units sold.

With arrow straight flanks and a lustful glossy shine, the paint is almost 100% with only a dusting of stone chips to the bumper and bonnet to report. The black trims that run around the windows are particularly prone to age are, free from corrosion and display a high shine. All of the glass is free from chips and the xenon lights are crystal clear. Pleasingly, typical areas such as rear arches, sills and boot edge / lock are also clean and clear of cosmetic issues.
Despite the mileage this Alpina presents in stunning condition having clearly been cherished by its 2 owners.
The first thing you notice when opening the door of this Alpina is that new car smell of fresh leather, it really is like stepping back in time to a BMW dealer in the late 90′s. The car has been garaged from new, which has saved the leather from being dried out so it still feels soft and supple. There are hardly any signs of use on the pedals, steering wheel and gear selector and they all have their original textured finish. All of the electrics work exactly as they should and is has not suffered from the common problems of faded pixels.
This particular example features some significant cost options from new with active seats, double glazing and electric rear blinds. The boot, with corresponding Alpina mat, presents perfectly.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Lifting the bonnet reveals an immaculate V8 engine tuned by Alpina. The engine has been routinely serviced by the main agent and performs admirably, with sufficient torque to compliment cruising characteristics as well as delivering a decent turn of pace when required; the car is a truly great all-rounder.
The gearbox is smooth and perfectly tuned to the V8 specification.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The sublime 19 inch multi-spoke Alpina alloys remain in excellent condition with all centre caps present and correct – the keys for which are nestled in the tool kit. The wheels are shod in a matching set of Continental ContiSports, with the fronts showing plenty of tread and the rear set replaced in May 2015.
The brakes feel strong and capable on the road, displaying plenty of material both on the discs and pads during our intake inspection.
This Alpina was first registered on 17th May 2001 having had its running in check with Damon Hill BMW at 1,186 miles. With only one previous owner the car has been enjoyed with rigorous service intervals at the main agent right up until 2014. Since then the car has had two further services with local specialist Millstream and sits up-to-date and ready to go.
A complete owners pack is complimented by a fully stamped service book with the correct B10 V8 specific literature.
